Ash Wednesday Worship

Join us in person or online for worship on Ash Wednesday as we begin the season of Lent together.

The call of Ash Wednesday and Lent is the call of God to us: “Return to me with all your heart.” In Old Testament thought, the heart is not the source of the affections, but the source of our intellect. I like to define the heart as “the place of our desires, deliberations and decisions.” The place of the real you. The reference to fasting, weeping, mourning refers to “grief for sin,” of which these are to be the external signs of internal change. And yet, as God works that repentance in us, He is waiting for us. Not waiting from afar, but close in His true heart: gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. When God works this in us, He turns away from the work He doesn’t want to have to do and turns back to us with His comfort, His joy, and His peace and that is accomplished in the sacrifice of Jesus for us. We will focus on that during this season.

We won’t be gathering on the following Wednesdays for Lenten worship, but we will be adding some Lent elements to the St Matthew in the Word resources.
